The Cost of Congress

Ever think about what it costs to keep the lights on in Congress? About how much we pay our Representatives and Senators and how much time they actually spend working for us vs. their donors and lobbyists? Or how many bills they introduce and, of those, how many actually make it into law? Who collects and maintains records of everything they do, preserves historical photos and materials, and maintains the offices and meeting rooms and ensures that they have a secure workplace? What does all this cost American taxpayers (you and I)?

According to the US Constitution, Congress’s “power of the purse” is its primary responsibility. Funding government activities and services is as essential as it gets but is rarely done on time. What do all the delays cost – not just in dollars, but in opportunity costs, preparedness and innovation? What does it cost us when Government shuts down?

The answers to all those questions and more are
contained in our new book, The Cost of Congress
